Curriculum
Spanish is taught once a week to grades K-5. Spanish is taught in various thematic units, many times parallel to those lessons being currently taught by their primary classroom teacher. Classes are taught largely in Spanish.
Kindergarten
Students are introduced to Spanish by learning basic greetings. They will learn how to use Spanish words while greeting one another. Students will learn numbers 1-10as well as colors. Kindergarten students will be introduced to new vocabulary by reading stories, learning new games and singing songs.
Grade 1
Students in First grade will expand upon concepts learned in Kindergarten by learning numbers 1-30, colors and shapes. Children will be expected to greet one another in Spanish and will be given Spanish names. Reading and writing in Spanish will be introduced and new songs and games will be incorporated into weekly lessons.
Grade 2
Learning short Spanish phrases increases knowledge of Spanish vocabulary in 2nd grade. Children will be speaking and spoken to more frequently is Spanish. Students will expand on the basic concepts and will be introduced to additional vocabulary. To aid in reading of the language, students will be introduced to the Spanish alphabet and will learn the letter sounds.
Grade 3
Third grade students will be able to speak in short sentences to one another. They will expand on the vocabulary learned by adding several nouns and will be able to write in short paragraph form. Students will count to 100 and will be able to correctly identify all letter sounds of the alphabet. Students will also use a Grade 3 Spanish dictionary.
Grade 4
Spanish learners will be able to speak in short sentences. Heavy emphasis is placed on speaking in Spanish as well as talk about themselves in Spanish to one another. Correct pronunciation is stressed. Verb conjugation in the present tense is introduced. Students work on writing in paragraph form.
Grade 5
Fifth graders freely converse with one another on the particular thematic unit we are studying. Heavy emphasis will be placed on speaking and listening in Spanish as students prepare reports on various subjects. Correct pronunciation is stressed. Verb conjugation into the present tense is practiced, along with introduction to irregular verbs. |
