My Favorite Bible Verse

Be kind one onto another, tenderhearted and forgiving one another. Just as in Christ, God has forgiven you. - Ephesians 4:32

My Greatest Joy in working in a Christian School

Seeing the students learning and growing in their knowledge along with their faith.

I Love Trinity Academy because

The love for Christ is so visible in the students and their families. Families are willing to step up and help out in so many ways.

About Me

I grew up in Wisconsin. I graduated from UW-River Falls. It is such a privilege and a joy to teach in a faith-based school where everything you teach is in relationship to Jesus Christ. In my free time, I enjoy getting together with friends and family. I enjoy walking, four-wheeling, reading, swimming, fishing, biking, and playing volleyball.

Mrs. Selleck
Welcome to 1st Grade!

My name is Char Selleck. I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year. I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself.

I grew up in Houlton, Wisconsin, and attended Somerset Schools. I am the youngest child in a family of four children. I have been teaching since 1994 when I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. I live in River Falls with my husband, Christian, our two sons, Gabriel and Kailee, and our dog, Ginger. We enjoy getting together with friends and family. We like going up to my parent’s cabin, 4-wheeling, swimming, fishing, biking, walking, reading, and playing volleyball.

I am really excited to be with the team at Trinity Academy! I feel truly blessed to be teaching 1st grade here. I hope to provide your child with the most successful and enjoyable 1st grade experience possible! There will be many opportunities to become involved with your child’s learning this year. Together we can make this year a great success. I look forward to getting to know you and your family. If you have any questions for me during the year, please call me at school (386-9349 ext. 28) or email: cselleck@trinityhudson.org.

With love and God bless,
Mrs. Selleck
Reading Work for March 8-12
Vocab Book 4-5:  Ring, Ring, Ring!
Ring! Ring! Ring! Put Out the Fire!
Fire! Fire! Ring! Ring! Ring!
Get the fire truck. Ding! Ding! Ding!
There is work that must be done.
We always run, run, run!
The fire is hot and the smoke is thick.
This is how we get there quick.
Out of the way! Here comes the hose.
Today we can’t clean.
The flames rose and rose.
Pump that pump! Spray that spray!
Make the fire go away!

Home Run Reading Calendars: Please turn them in at the end of each month.
The Home Run Reading Program is a dual purpose program.  It serves to encourage reading school wide for all students.  We have incentives to help encourage students to read.  By participating, students are eligible to enjoy school wide activities as they meet the benchmarks set by the teaching staff.  These are displayed in the hallway.

The second purpose of the Home Run Reading Log is to provide the documentation that students are completing their assigned reading homework.  Any time students are reading, for classroom assignments or just for fun the minutes can be recorded on the Home Run Reading calendar and counted toward our all school goal.

If your child does not complete the calendar and turn it in monthly, two things will happen.  They will not be able to participate in the all school activities that are rewarded to the student body for meeting the reading minute goals.  Secondly, their grade may be affected as related to home reading assignments.  The students are expected to read or be read to 20 minutes/day.

Our objective for the Home Run Reading program is to provide a fun way for students to get excited about reading and encourage students to read not only for homework assignments but for fun as well.

Faith Formation

At Trinity Academy, we incorporate the Christian life-style into all areas of the curriculum. To help students further their understanding about our Father as well as how we should live our lives, students participate in a Religion curriculum developed by Concordia Publishing House (CHP). Daily lessons are designed to articulate the path Christianity has taken since the opening of time. Beginning with Creation, the series highlights key events from the Old Testament. Students dive into the Word studying historical pinnacles and events that help to build the foundations for our traditions today. Students also learn more about our Savior, Jesus Christ, including his life, legacy, and love for us. First Graders lead in worship, sing and participate in daily devotions and prayer. Memory curriculum is included thereby aiding students in growing in their knowledge of the Word.

Reading

First grade is an important stepping stone in the development of students’ reading skills. The students will learn to read basic sight vocabulary words, apply word attack skills, effectively use comprehension skills, use correct punctuation and sentence structure, and know the monthly word list, and create an enjoyment for reading. During whole group instruction (Shared Reading) students continue to develop new reading strategies and skills. Guided Reading (Flexible Grouping) is a small group of students working toward a common goal. Groups fluctuate during the year depending on each individual’s learning. Students practice decoding, fluency, and reading with expression. They also develop skills in comprehension, classification, and summarization. Literacy work stations are used to develop fluency, gain math skills, build comprehension, express ideas, organize thoughts, and build confidence. We use McGraw Hill Reading Series.

Writing

As students progress in their knowledge of letters, sounds, and word families, their writing proficiencies also increase. Students are able to practice and apply their knowledge in written form during various writing activities throughout the year. From books to letters to journaling, students expand their talents in writing. Specific emphasis is placed upon developing complete sentences using appropriate punctuation, and identifying simple parts of speech.

Spelling

The first grade Spelling curriculum is based upon the same principles as that of reading and incorporating some daily sight words. The focus is on word analysis. The words are adopted from Rebecca Sitton, Dolch, and Fry lists.

Handwriting

When students know how to make letters without guesswork, their written communication skills increase. Therefore, Trinity Academy encourages the development of penmanship. The D’Nealian style of handwriting, also known as Modern Manuscript, is taught throughout the primary grades. Focus is placed on the proper formation, slant, and spacing of letters and words while properly holding a writing utensil.

Language Arts

Science

In Science we use a variety of resources to instruct: hands-on activities with Foss Kits and a Christian-perspective text book. The first graders are intrigued by many topics dealing with Science. The hands-on activities help students gain a better understanding of the topics at hand. When possible trade book materials are incorporated. Some of the units included for the first grade science curriculum include: matter, simple machines, sound, air and weather, senses, teeth, and the sun, moon, stars, and planets.

Math

Students’ mathematical skills are being learned and refined through the McMillian McGraw Hill curriculum in first grade. Our first grade math is diverse with the intention of helping students to solidify their foundational computation skills. The focus is on numerical relationships, adding and subtracting up to two-digit numbers, graphing and recording data and making charts, understanding place value to 100, patterning, learning time to the five minutes, identify, name, count, and exchange numerical value of coins up to quarters. Students are being challenged through higher level thinking skills and activities

Social Studies

In social studies, first graders study the social contexts of our lives. Beginning with the concepts of us in relationship to our homes, communities, state, country, and world. Students progress into studying various family make-ups, handling situations with others, and learning key events in our nation’s history.

Art

The introduction to the elements of art continues. Artists such as Cassatt, Van Gogh, Renoir and Eric Carle help illustrate and enrich the learning objectives. Students will use their knowledge to paint pictures, make prints, collages, drawings, sculptures and textiles.

Music & Band

Students explore various types of musical styles. They learn through listening, echoing, movement, pitch, simple instrument play, rhythm, and tonal exploration. All students are required to participate in the annual Christmas Musical and spring choral concert. Students in these early elementary grades have the option to sing as part of the Trinity Academy Choir.

Technology

Describes and demonstrates the correct use of input and output devices (mouse, keyboard, printer) along with the ability to use age-appropriate software. Students showcase the ability to identify basic computer components, what they do, and use basic computer terminology. Also, students learn the ability to log on and off using their usernames and password; along with the ability to open, run, and close a software program.

Physical Education

First graders continue building their skill sets to include rhythm, eye-foot coordination, jump rope, kickball, t-ball, and lawn games. Students also have units that encompass cooperative/team games, space and body awareness, manipulatives, parachute activities, scoops games, station work, and fitness. Students’ loco motor skills and fitness levels are assessed throughout the year.

Spanish

Students in First grade will expand upon concepts learned in Kindergarten by learning numbers 1-30, colors and shapes. Children will be expected to greet one another in Spanish and will be given Spanish names. Reading and writing in Spanish will be introduced and new songs and games will be incorporated into weekly lessons.
