My Favorite Bible Verse

This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. - Psalm 118:24

My Greatest Joy in working in a Christian School

Every time a student is acting like Jesus towards another person and when students make the connection that academics and God are tied together.

I Love Trinity Academy because

I have the pleasure of teaching students with wonderful, supportive families who believe in the importance of a faith-based education.

About Me

Teaching has always been my passion even though I have worked in other career fields. I live on a farm north of Baldwin with my husband. We have four children, four llamas, chickens, rabbits, and a variety of small animals. We raise honeybees and enjoy our life in the country.

Dear Parents,
It is with great joy that I welcome your child to my class. This is a very special time in your child's life. He or she will be learning many new things this year-academic skills, organizational skills, social skills, self-confidence, and responsibility. In fact, the year your child spends in fifth grade will be one of the most important and valuable years in his or her development, readying him or her for the years ahead in middle school.
You play a major role in helping your child reach the maximum of his or her potential. Research in the area of child development points out that most of a child's intellectual development takes place outside the formal classroom. This means that children spend a great deal of time with their first and most important teachers-their parents. Indeed, as parents, your involvement in your child's learning experiences will have much to do with how well your child succeeds in school and in later life. By working together, I believe we can all help your child become the best person possible-socially, emotionally, spiritually, and academically.
I have prepared a handbook to give you and your child some ideas as to what to expect over the course of the next year. if you have any questions or concerns throughout the year, please do not hesitate to contact me.
I am looking forward to working with you this year as we help your child experience all the joys of learning. Your participation and encouragement will be contributions to your child's success this year! I hope your child enjoys 5th grade as much as I do!

 In Christian love,

 Mrs. Joanne Warner

What's going on. . . . .?

Reading/Language Arts

The 5th and 6th graders are mixed into new Literature Circle groups. These groups were determined by interest and ability. We meet with the Middle School 3 days a week. Every other time is a work day to work on their literature logs. We will be starting new literature circle groups this week.
We should complete our reading of My Brother Sam Is Dead.
We will read a short book together titled, Across the Oregon Trail. Each student will have the opportunity to read one chapter aloud to the class. The book ties in with our westward expansion unit in Social Studies.
Students should be reading 30 minutes every night at home.

We will continue work in the G.U.M. book. It is a practice book focusing on grammar, usage and mechanic skills.

Writing:
Our next project in writing will be learning how to write a research paper. This is a big project and will be a major portion of the 3rd quarter grade for Language Arts. Each student will choose a country to research and also have a display. I have sent home a large packet of information with all the requirements and timelines. They will learn how to write a bibliography and how to site their sources. Students will need to write an outline before they write their paragraphs. The cultural aspect typed paragraphs are due Friday, March 12.

Book of the Quarter:
The genre for this quarter will be biography or autobiography. The students will need to choose a book at their reading level. The project will involve each student dressing up as the main character and giving a speech about the character’s life. The speeches will be given on March 29 and March 31. Requirements and specifications for this project have been handed out to the students.

Math:
We are continuing our work on fractions. It is imperative that students know their math facts or they will be frustrated in completing the assignments.
Chapter 13 will focus on multiplying fractions! We will estimate products and learn how to solve a multi-step word problem.

Health:
We will continue our Health unit study with The Great Body Shop.
To conclude our Health unit, Mrs. Warner and Pastor Booth will spend one class period, Wednesday, March 31, talking about Human Growth and Development. Pastor Booth will work with the boys and Mrs. Warner will talk with the girls. I will send a letter and permission slip home in Thursday Folder, March 4.

Social Studies
The next unit is another simulation learning experience!!!! We become pioneers and learn about the Westward expansion of the United States!!!!!! The students will simulate situations and events similar to those experienced by pioneers who headed west in early wagon trains. As settlers heading west during the mid-1800s the students face challenges such as floods, droughts, blocked trails, snakes Native Americans, and lack of food. The would-be homesteaders must make numerous individual and small group decisions (e.g. what to do about a lack of water, how to cross a flooded river, which trail to take). These decisions and the other events provide the students with a realistic view of what pioneer life was like, why people went west, and what happened to them along the trail.

Spelling:
This week’s spelling words focus on words from Social Studies. Workbook pages 121-126 are due Friday, March 12. Final test is Friday, March 12.

Religion:
March Memory Work Quiz: March 31

Faith Formation

The fifth grade reading curriculum includes a variety of reading materials from many genres to expose students to the different forms of literature. A reading textbook, McGraw-Hill, is included in the program as well as several novels that are read over the course of the year. These novels are read as a whole group as well as with literature circles, which challenge students to make choices about the literature they read. Additionally, it improves reading skills such as decoding and the use of context clues to comprehend text. Literature circles allow the students to put the skills they have learned into practice. Teaching reading strategies and skills including making predictions, compare and contrast, drawing conclusions, recognizing main idea and supporting details are the foundations of the reading program.

Writing

Spelling

The spelling curriculum is based on sound patterns in words. The spelling lists correspond to the spelling strategies. Each week students are engaged in activities that allow the students to learn about prefixes, suffixes, synonyms, antonyms, etc. The students are expected to transfer this knowledge and apply correct spelling in their daily written work.

Handwriting

Language Arts

The fifth grade program works to make connections between and across subject areas. Integrating Language Arts into other subjects allows students to understand the need for proper writing, grammar, and spelling. Students will complete an expository piece of writing, a short persuasive piece, a descriptive paragraph, write a complete response to essay questions, and complete a research paper. The six traits of writing is the basis for our program. Ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions become an integral part of the writing process. Throughout the year, students learn to write in a variety of styles and genres.

The students will practice giving oral presentations. They will learn to present effectively, using appropriate eye contact, projection, tone, volume, rate, and articulation.

Science

The science curriculum provides a balance of hands-on learning opportunities and learning information from an expository text. Chapters are grouped together, creating units on specific topics. The fifth grade curriculum focuses on the solar system, mixtures and solutions, landforms, matter and energy, and electricity and magnets. Every three years a Science Fair is held at our school where third, fourth, and fifth graders showcase a science project using the Scientific Method. The fifth grade students also spend a three- day emersion experience studying environmental science at Camp St. Croix .
